π before selling my used Toyota Avalon, I researched the local market price. I went to the Bank to get their price. I went online and looked at dealers prices. Then I priced it $2,000 above the "book" value. The buyer offered me $1,000 below what I asked. I accepted it. I feel somewhat happy, but somewhat guilty. I knowingly charged him too much. Nor did I tell him. about it. Did I "steal" a thousand dollars from him?
@A-Unique-Nickname saidit's too late for that as i gave all the money (cash) to my wife. She has always handled the finances..
No, you sold a car to a person who was willing to pay that price for it. You're happy, you got some money, and they're happy because they needed a car. win, win.
But hey, you can always clear your conscious by either giving the 1k back or donating it to charity π

I don't think so. You sold a commodity for a price the public is willing to pay. It's called free enterprise. Tell your wife to put at least 10% of the money into your savings account and be careful how you spend the rest. π
@Drewnogal saidCaveat emptor.π
@mlb62
The only reason ‘I’ would have felt guilty would be if I’d knowingly sold it privately with a major fault on it. As for selling it part ex at a garage? That wouldn't cause me any grief as I’ve been stung by garages before with faulty cars they’ve sold me.
@Great-Big-Stees saidlol and I even had the legal title to give to the buyer....π€... but really, the thing that bothers me is I intentionally overpriced the car...knowing I'd have to "bargain" and lower the price.

@mlb62 saidJust shows deep down your an honest man. He agreed on the price, perhaps he thought he was getting the better deal?

@moonbus saidAny purchase I make I have a maximum amount I am willing to spend. If I don’t get my price, I bow out.

@Very-Rusty saidOr maybe he wanted the item so badly, he was willing to over-bid to make sure no one else got it.

@Very-Rusty saidYeah, stores sometimes mark something 'down' from a fictitious higher price to lure people to 'buy now and save.' No one ever saves by buying; you spend to buy, whatever the price is.
I still think he figured he was getting a better deal out of it, guys always go for something when they think they are winning out on the deal has been my experience.
@moonbus saidI thought the story here was about a car and a private deal. π

I am pretty sure most people are aware of the mark up in stores, so it APPEARS they are getting a deal when actually they are NOT!!!!
@Very-Rusty saidmlb said he marked it up 2,000 above market value, and negotiated down 1,000 -- same idea, IMO.
