Not sure if it really happened, but here's an article saying that ol' Boris wants the Fish to go free... or lock himself up as well.

Well, Fischer and Spassky would have two things in common in their cell: They have both been World Champions and they don´t like members of the Jewish people.
Perhaps even Aljechin could join them from above? He was no great fan of Jewish people either and he was a very great World Champion.
Right?

Hm... I'd have to see that quote to believe it, given Spassky's wide reputation as a gentleman and a good-natured fellow.
All champions of the world knew the so-called Jewish problem".
Strong words, these, but at least he tries to be open and honest.
I don´t blame him for these views. I have heard worse.
Dominic Lawson in his book 'The Inner Game' (p28) writes "There were other reasons for welcoming an end to the professional relationship between Spassky and Nigel [Short]. The Russian ex-world champion, in common with many lesser men of his age and race, was a thoroughgoing anti-Semite, and there were occasions when he seemed to be teaching Nigel how this could be applied to chess. Following this expert tuition, Nigel would pronounce a certain opening, such as the Grunfeld Defence, to be a 'Jewish' opening... Under the Spassky influence , Nigel even began to refer to a 'Jewish' style of playing chess. This, I gathered was an indirect, modernist style of almost wilful complexity - as practiced by the likes of Garri Kasparov and Jonathan Speelman, and not at all like the classically direct play of Boris Spassky and Nigel Short. Fortunately, with the dropping of Boris Spassky [as his trainer], Nigel also dropped his racial theories of chess."
