If you buy the Ad-aware Pro it is much better than SE, but with either one make sure that you check for updates by clicking on the tab that looks like the Earth on the top. Pro will block access to your registry and will keep your system in tip top shape.

Or you could just dump Windows and install Linux 😀

Microsoft have a beta anti-spyware software available on their website too.

Personally i run spybot s&d, ms anti-spyware, use firefox browser and i never get any spyware problems.

I've never really had any spyware problems, but the MS product seems a pretty stable beta.
Obviously there will be the naysayers going off how crap any product by MS is, but I trust that MS would be able to protect their OS better than any other company, so I only use MS AS.

Often mistaken for spyware is a Microsoft program that runs in XP. From time to time it brings up popups and cant be removed by normal anti-ad/spyware programs. If you are having this problem go to the control panel then to "Administrative Tools" Click on "Services" in the list find "Messenger" open its properties click stop and then disable at start up.

I'll go along with that.
You don't need to get rid of spyware with Firefox, 'cos it's not full of holes like IE.

...but firefox is awful to use for ftp. IE is so easy! i used firefox, but IE for ftp, which would be fine if i didn't have a random spyware program on IE that slowed my comptuer right down when i open IE and is just plain ol' irritating. spybot spots it, but can't seem to fix it.

i'm trying to get around to installing linux, but i don't have the time! :'(

Go to: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
and D/L Spybot ver 1.3. WHile you are there also D/L the updates for it. Then install Spybot, open it, run it. Then run the update patches.
Then open Spybot again and click on IMMUNINIZE.
You have to run IMMUNINIZE twice.

You're all set! 😉
