Kind of my point. It is an old adage, but I think it's entirely possible for applications other than original intent to take shape the further in time the phrase makes it way. For instance, we apply it nowadays in a manner more consistent with what Ice Cold suggested, i.e., to receive attention (the assumed good), draw attention to yourself (annoy those ...[text shortened]... ing; more of a notation of how easily boundaries are moved when disconnected by time.
