what does d4 mean the way i do it is to say the square letter and
number of where the peice is and then the square letter and number
of the place i put the peice. so what are the other abreviations???

d4 is actually pawn to d4. Or in your notations d2-d4.

Yeah! This modern shorthand notation still throws me...it makes me
think. Who wants to do that when playing chess? I'm still reading
books with the old notation style (KP-K4, QP-Q4, etc.) and they are far
easier to comprehend than books with the newer notation.
