My on-going saga with the wireless router has had me dis the
cat 5 cable hard wired to the comp and only rely on the wireless link.
It died in less than an hour. Before that I thought maybe there was
a problem with the LAN on the comp but it was part of the MB so
bought a PCI LAN card, cheap enough, but no luck. So then thinking
the computer itself was causing problems, pulled the cat 5 connection,
the wireless part lasted less than an hour. So now I am back hard
wired with cat 5 into comp #1, (#2, which is switched in with data
switch, switching keyboard, mouse and monitor, has a wireless card)
So now on comp #1, hard wired, my next experiment is to disable
the wireless part, there is a box to disable it when you get into the
URL, 192.168.1.1. So am currently checking to see how long it stays
up this time. The router that is🙂
If it stays up, I am thinking some kind of interferance, there is a
wireless router next door, I tried using differant channels to no
avail. Actually only tried two channels, 6 and 9. Maybe will try more
if it turns out the hard wired test proves to keep working. I tried
lower MPU numbers also no help. Anyone with some ideas here will
be welcomed!

I wonder if it is a signal problem? I can't get AM radio at my house, and cell phones don't work either. My portable phones barely work far from the base.

You don't have much luck with computers, do you... 😕

Anyhoo, if you filter out all the babble in your post are you basically saying that you CAN get a wireless connection between the 2 systems but it drops out after a few minutes?

I had similiar problems and found out I needed firmware update for the router. The router has an option to do this itself, but it is unreliable, per phone tech. I did a manual update and it works perfect. after update I had to reset modem and router by unplugging power and plugging back in. once you get it running it will be worth the effort. p.s. i have a belkin 802.11g router

Yep, it drops out after maybe a half an hour or so. I did the firmware
upgrade thing already, the latest test: I hooked up the cat 5 cable
to the computer so the router is hardwired and disabled the
wireless route which theoretically should eliminate interference
problems from cell phones or other routers. I left the comp on all night
and found the router went dead anyway. So I am thinking the only
thing left is the cable modem. I pretty much eliminated everything
else. Its the third router to do the same thing so I assume its not
the router. HELP!

It could possibly be a power management issue if 3 seperate routers have died! Try connecting the Router's to a different power supply to the one you're using.

Also, check the Router's status logs. They should tell you why the Router has stopped working. Failing that, watch the Router status lights until it dies.

Its a Linksys WRT54G V5 with firmware 1.00.6 the latest I think.
I just talked with their tech support guy and he said with a cable
modem you need to do whats called a 'mac address clone'
which we did and with the proper address in, it refused to get the net
up. With mac address clone disabled, I am able to get back on the
net but its unstable and only lasts for an hour or so. They said they
thought the router itself is bad, possible I guess. They want me to try
a new cable modem and it that doesn't work they will issue me a new
router. I hope that works, this has been going on for months with me
trying new troubleshooting techniques to no avail.

i bought a new router a couple of months ago and had the same problem that your having. i did everything to try to fix it and after about a month i sent it back for a new one and it had the same problem (it would work for 1-2 hours then knock off and wouldn't work again for hours) then i though it might be the telephone line, nop plug in modem worked fine. then i tried moving the router closer to the 2 computers and it started to work better, its about 2 metres away from the computer and the singal strengh is far better, it only knocks itself off about once a week but it works a couple of minutes later. so if you can try to move it closer to your computers and see if that helps, i know a few people who have had problem with different types of routers and most of them have been becauce of a crap singal.

Hi, thanks for the info. I have the router about three feet from the
comp with the wireless hooked up, so its plenty close. Right now I have
the wireless disabled and the other comp on hardwire just to eliminate
that part of the issue. Linksys says the router is bad but what are the
chances of two routers in a row, from two differant companies, being
bad? Still possible but they both had the same problem. The search
goes on.
