Coincidences are far more often than most people think. When you take 1000 events, pick out 25% carefully choosing only those events which favour your chosen outcome, then present the best of that 250 as if they were a random sample, you'll get a very similar outcome.

We all know the scam that goes like this:
Tell 32 people that Stock X will go up and 32 people that Stock X will go down. Let's say Stock X goes up. Then you have 32 happy customers, forget the other 32.
Now tell 16 of your 32 that Stock Y will go up and the other 16 that Stock Y will go down. Let's say Stock Y goes down. Forget the first 16, you still have 16 happy customers.
Do the same with Stock Z and you now only have 8 happy customers. Get those 8 to write testimonials for your website where you're offering to sell an expensive investment-picking book.

Selecting only those events which produce the desired outcome is easy, seeing through it is equally easy.
