Cows and pigs are extensively farmed and their sole purpose, in the eyes of many, is for human consumption; on the other hand, horses are seen as companions, like household pets. People are sentimental about them which is why it's such a taboo to eat horse meat.

Rabbit is widely eaten in France where it's not often kept as a pet; in the UK however, rabbits are pets and although it is available in some supermarkets, few people eat that meat. We don't have a word for "bunny" in French 😉

In France we have specialist butcher shops (boucheries chevalines) where only horse meat is sold as I believe ordinary butcher shops are not allowed to sell it.

It's not just France though: horse meat is eaten in Austria,Germany, Belgium, Quebec, Iceland, Italy, Japan (where I believe they eat it raw), the Netherlands. Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland etc... to name a few.

That's your usual 'contribution' - run your mouth off and flame everybody without even thinking about what you say!

(probably get lots of recs for saying this). 😵

Yes, we have horse sashimi here. It's lovely, MMmmmmmm.
Japanese have some strange eating habits: raw chicken, raw fish, raw beef (not tartare), raw horse; however, they don't believe that you can eat rabbit.

In many countries, rabbit is both eaten and a common household pet. Thus, your logic is flawed.

Pigs are more complex and intelligent than horses, cows, dogs, cats and most other mammals, yet most people are happy to eat them, so intelligence isn't a factor either.

Basically, I think people eat whatever the hell they want, but look down on those who eat what they don't. People are idiots.

Horses are more friendly.

Q. What did the horse say to the one-legged jockey?

A. How're you getting on jimmy? 😳

I don't think my logic is flawed, I think what I said applies to most of the Western World where we generally don't eat our pets.

I did not argue for or against eating horse meat in my post, but merely stating facts; but just for your info I was a non-meat eater or pesco-vegetarian for 6 years.

By the way, I'm curious to know what makes you think that " pigs are more complex and intelligent than horses, cows, dogs, cats and most other mammals"...

It seems that it depends on the way an animal 'talks' that affects this taboo. Purr, woof, neigh is non eatable. If a horse oinked or moo'd people would have less qualms about eating them.....I reckon.
