Hi, i'm looking for a way to play chess w/ my daughter who is currently stationed overseas. her network filters out sites like redhotpawn and she is also prevented from installing programs on her machine. i remember playing chess by email through a server a few years back. it seems to me that it didn't require any d/l and was turn based--you didn't have to be online at the same time as your opponent. i'm guessing the server just sent html pages of the game to each player and recorded single moves at a time.

anyway, i'm looking for some suggestions of sites where i can find this type of play (ideally, w/ more than chess).

thanks

You need to learn to use chess notation and send an email that says...

1. e4

You should get one back saying something like

1. ...e5

Next think you know, you are playing chess. If she can't install anything on her computer, that is the only way to go.

like he said, its the only way if her comps are blocked. You still
can do email right? then just send the moves. 1e4 e5 2f4 would
be the kings gambit as one example.

i doubt if i'll get her to play that way. she's not really that geeky. i'm sure that i've used somethign similar to what i described a couple years ago. it's basically somethign like what rhp does, but instead of browsing to the site (which is blocked for her) the server sends an html email message.

nobody's seen a game system like that? (man i wish i was a programmer).

My school filter prevents me from going the RHP, so I log in to one of the following.

www.timeforchess.com
www.chessatwork.com
www.redhotchess.com

But I still can't play games, as the filter blocks the word "Game" in URLS...so www.rehotpawn.com/mygames/gameid=?2983624689369246 doesn't work.

Being a programmer wouldn't help you. The firewall she has will simply not allow you to breach it - and get this... if you DID manage to breach it she could get FIRED!

She is shown a message when she logs into the company computer that all computer access is MONITORED! I know, I have the same problem where I work. We had a guy who had worked at Delphi for 25 years and they FIRED HIM cause he used his computer to make some stock exchanges! Can you imagine that!? They allowed him access to the Fidelity Stock program but monitored all his actions, then fired him for using it!

Alright, let's use a little common sense here. Since she is monitored (and believe me, she is - all your emails are read by her superiors) WHY would you want to put her in this delicate position? Don't tell me that she doesn't have a computer at home.

she's in the service. they're not gonna fire her. no, she doesn't have access to a personal PC, but even if she did it wouldn't help her any b/c the only network in town is the base's. she's stationed in central asia right now.
