Lance Armstrong. Period. The greatest living athlete, and I dare anyone to come up with a legitimate contender for that title. (Yes, I am biased-- how can I not be? An American dominating an international sport? Forget the cancer, the guy is just plain superhuman.) If you can still get your hands on it, read the article about him in the issue of Sports Illustrated where he's on the cover, as Athlete of the Year.

The 1981 Grand National provided a triumphant ending to a tale of a crippled horse and a cancer beating jockey. Aldaniti had suffered two bouts of tendon trouble and a broken hock bone. Bob Champion had been given eight months to live after being diagnosed with cancer. Throughout his long illness ,Bob Champion continued to watch Aldaniti's progress . Josh Gifford had bought Aldaniti at the Ascot sale in May 1974 and performed wonders during training. Gifford made a promise to Bob Champion that his job as stable jockey would be there following his recovery. On the 4th April 1981 Champion and Aldaniti set out to win the Grand National. By the 11th fence the pair had taken the lead. Their joint dream came true, both had overcome all to win the Grand National and Aldaniti was the first winner since Sundew in 1957 to lead throughout the final circuit.
Right on, Tim! And may he stand right in the face of all these over paid athletes who get more exposure for being over-indulgent off the field/court. He quietly proved he was the best at what he does and he is one hell of a guy. And he never once complained about never getting the exposure these cry-baby millionaire athletes get. Kirk

He has devoted incredible amounts of time and energy to helping cancer patients and raising awareness for early testing, he is as humble as can be, and he has more determination than I could ever dream of having. FOUR CONSECUTIVE TOURS DE FRANCE, AND HE IS FAVORED TO WIN THE NEXT ONE! Amazing.
