if the power is minus, you take it as one over the calculation as x^(-1) = 1/x.

e.g. 2^(-3)=1/(2^3)

Yup. That's where i comes into the equation. The square root of -4 is 2i I think.etc. In mathematical terms you would say that it is 'not a real number'.
