Gauss, like most of that era did not limit themselves to a particular field.
Not to mention that all the divisions we now make made no sense whatsoever in those days.

I really like when people mention the Gauss law and the fact that he got his name on some physics unit as a fitting legacy to all he has done to physics and math.

What do you think of Sir Charles Wheatstone? I thought he was awesome.
Discovered polarized light, then used it to be able to make a sun finder on a cloudy day...
Invented the reed we use for concertina's, harmonica's, and accordians.
When h ...[text shortened]... vibrate. Pretty impressive stuff for a 14 YO, don't you think? And in the early 1800's too.

Well just check out all things Gauss accomplished and then let me know if you ever imagined ha had done so much. When I talk about public recognition it's not just having units named after you. Think about Hawking. He's got a lot of fame and has done nothing when compared with the likes of Gauss, Lagrange, Landau, Dirac and a whole lot of others more.

Up untill now I don't think I ever heard of him... But what strikes me more in what you describe is the fact that a 14 year old was already doing experiments that put the wave nature of light into the spotlight when a lot of older men were still arguing about that more or less at that time. So can you give me a more precise date on that so I can make things more on perspective?... And yes this is very impressive but please trust me on the fact that Gauss was on a different level even when compared to most science giants.

Would you like to join our club? I have the feeling you'd make an excellent addition.
