I know I am new to this website and I haven't subscribed so I shouldn't be posting in the forums but I need some help.
I need the next 10 months away from chess to focus on my
college sport.
No need to ask what sport or offer advice to improve my ability, I get yelled at by my coaches enough.
What can I do to maintain or even improve my chess at the most limited amount of time?
Chess isn't the only thing I am stopping/delaying, the list goes on but since this is a chess site I will keep it to that.
That means no chess, or atleast minimum chess study.
College is starting back up and my coaches have informed me of my schedule and it looks dim for chess.
Any time I have off will be sleeping or studying for classes.
I am a solid 1500 if I focus and I don't want to lose that.
Great website by the way, I can't believe I spent years at other websites that I now know sucked.
Any help is appreciated.

during your ten months away) to read biographies of chess masters.
Best wishes.

school first, apparently sports as well, so that leaves chess last. seems pretty simple to me: if you can't find the time/energy, you cut the chess first. if you run out of time/energy, you cut the chess first.
but if you manage to fit it in your day somewhere, 20min of tactics a day for a year would make a huge difference.
that said, coming here is a huge risk to begin with, as 90% of newcomers burn out. if you've got the chess virus, CC is like treating it with crack.
You want answers or do you want the truth? You can't handle the truth!
Son, we live in a world with chess matches that must be played. Who's gonna do it? You?
I have more responsibility than you can fathom. You weep for chess and curse the school and sports. You don't know what I know. Playing chess over school and sports saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque to you, saves lives!
But deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you need me on that chess board. We use words like castling, check, checkmate. They're the backbone of our lives. You use them as a punchline!
I haven't the time or inclination to explain myself to a man who needs my advisory about chess but questions the way I play it, where I play it or when I play. Better just to thank me. Or pick up a chess board and stand a post. But I don't give a damn what you think you are supposed to do regarding your chess playing!
Did I play chess when I was supposed to go to school and do sports? You're goddamn right I did!

Then you can rant and rave about how you think you are a chess soldier.
Hell i'm 1500+ USCF and I still think and know that is nothing.
You think your 1250 average on a website makes you a god or something?

its nothing but Chess positions and puzzles for tactics endgames and the
like. Pick this up, you'll improve with your mere 20-30 minutes a day.
Also find a type of music you like, that makes your mind more active...
something with a driving beat. Put it on while you study, you need some
type of constant so that when it comes time to bring back your chess study
you can use it like a steroid for your mind. The music comes on, and your
in the mode.
