My girlfriend and I went to a friend's Texas Hold 'Em poker tournament tonight. 21 people played at $40 per person with a $40 re-buy. She took 1st place for $608 and I took 3rd for $304. That's $912 between the two of us. That's a nice day's work.

Lucky in cards, unlucky in love. I hope you stuck by your socialist principles and redistributed your winnings equally between the losers.

If giving away my $304 would cause a worldwide socialist community to be ushered in, then I would gladly do it. But I'm afraid the only thing that would actually be accomplished would be my impoverishment within a capitalist system. So I'll hang onto my money for now, thank you very much.

You seem to suffer under the perennial misconception that socialism means giving everything away and living in poverty. That is simply not the case.

WOW! Hang on to that girl! 🙂

In fact you should take her to the Soaring Eagles casino. I'm told by a friend that they started up poker again after closing it last summer, and that most people who play there aren't very good - just looking for a good time. He takes his wife up there to play Texas Hold'Em. They play for about 12 hours and usualy break even or win a few bucks, but they have a lot of fun doing it.

Texas Hold 'Em is an affront to true poker; it's no wonder a socialist would play a game where you have to share cards with the masses. I'll keep my cards in my hand in Draw or boldly show most of them in Stud; but they are mine and mine alone! It is a further sign of the moral degradation of our society that such a Communist inspired game is now so popular; we can only hope that Jesus returns soon and clears the temples of Vegas from this abnomination and the Elect will play 7 card Stud or 5 card Draw in Heaven for all eternity.

If anyone wants to play using 'funny money',

www.americascardroom.com

is a pretty good site, in my opinion. You can play for free, or for real money.

www.ultimatebet.com offers a similar service - free chips or real money tables.

Tell us about some of your hands. What sorts of mistakes did your opponents make?

What a wonderful teachable moment! Do poor people remain poor because of the mistakes they make or because rich people play the game better?

Some good hands. A little well timed bluffing. A little luck. I'm not much of a gambler or a cardshark, but I've place in the money 4 out of the 5 times I've gone to these particluar tournaments. This one was the biggest, though.
