How Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant” became a Thanksgiving classic
Updated Nov. 26, 2025: During the Thanksgiving holiday, radio stations around the country will play Arlo Guthrie’s 1967 recording of “Alice’s Restaurant” – including The Colorado Sound. We’ll play the song at noon on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 27).
But why is this 18-minute song about littering and Vietnam considered a Thanksgiving song? Several years ago, Erin O’Toole, then host of KUNC’s Colorado Edition (and now host of In the NoCo), put that question to Colorado Sound host and program director Margot.
Maybe I'll establish my own Thanksgiving Day tradition by posting this youtube in the General Forum every Thanksgiving Day.
