There are 9374 prisoners unable to leave their computers. They are held there by a misterious addictive force produced by Red Hot Pawn. The images of RHP they see on their computer screen, they believe to be real. But what they call "Chess" is merely an online projection of the real chess. Everyone they meet on RHP exists in a higher form in the real world. But these prisoners believe that RHP is the real world as they see nothing else.

A few people have escaped Red Hot Pawn, and came back to tell the others that another world exists out there. But the prisoners think that those people are crazy; 'how could there be another world when this one is real'? Russ, the one who holds the hostages, bans these "returners" for fear that the others might have the same revalations.

The real world isn't that great.
In reality we are just people in these jel filled pods with hoses and wires going in and out of them.
I prefer this RHP thing to breaking out of the pod again ,thank you.

But can you prefer it knowing the truth? Isn't the knowledge that you're not living in the highest reality bothersome?

Then again, how could you be sure that that is the highest reality at all. Maybe that's how you rationalize it.
