I'm aware that this is a world wide site and not all of you will have heard of the British Pop group The Beautiful south. If this is so you will never have heard the songwriting genius of Heaton and Rotheray.
I just felt i had to say something about their new album SUPERB.
I really can't think of a more apt title. This has to be their finest moment. The Musical originality and lyrical content of the songs is truly mindblowing. One song in particular, BED OF NAILS, would surely have gone down in history as an all time classic love song if only it had been released 10 or 15 years ago. It's just a shame that mainstrem musical tastes have changeed so much. I suppose i'm a bit biased as i'm a huge fan anyway but this album is truly moving.
Anyway, just wanted to give it a plug really. Has anybody else got a copy. If so what do you think?
Originally posted by power moverI just dug up one of their CD's from the depth of my CD collection yesterday and gave it a whirl as I couldn't remember anything about it. The album is "Blue is the colour". I think the lyrics of "Don't marry her" are absolutely fantastic and it must be up there with one of my favourite songs. "Rotterdam" is pretty good too.

However, the rest of the album bores the hell out of me.
Although not quite up to the standard of SUPERB, Blue is the colour is still a fantastic album. Give it another listen. The track on that album HAVE FUN is one of my favourite BS songs. Just listen to those down on your luck lyrics. And what about little Blue another classic BS track.
I suppose if you dont like something you don't like it but whatever you say, Blue is the colour isn't boring.

Didn't know they were a British band though.
Heaton does have flashes of lyrical genius I agree - but The Beautiful South in my opinion will never be as good as The Housemartins (PH's 1st band)...
I saw BS at the Sheffield Arena a few years ago and they were garbage, the venue was too big for them. They're better suited to smaller, more intimate venues.
By the way - Paul Heaton is a massive Blades fan - met him a couple of times at away matches - nice bloke!
Originally posted by blade68If I remember right Paul is also Inter Milan supporter. They have good, bitter drinkin' songs, "Liars's Bar, Look What I Found in My Beer.." The Housemartins were heh, to quote Ian Dury, There Ain't Half Been Some Clever Bastards 😀

(Heaton/Rotheray)
Line One is the time
That you, you first stayed over at mine
And we drank our first bottle of wine
And we cried
Line Two we're away
And we both, we both had nowhere to stay
Well the bus-shelter's always OK
When you're young
Now you're older and I look at your face
Every wrinkle is so easy to place
And I only write them down just in case
That you die
Let's take a look at these crows feet, just look
Sitting on the prettiest eyes
Sixty 25th of Decembers
Fifty-nine 4th of Julys
Not through the age or the failure, children
Not through the hate or despise
Take a good look at these crows feet
Sitting on the prettiest eyes
Line Three I forget
But I think, I think it was our first ever bet
And the horse we backed was short of a leg
Never mind
Line Four in a park
And the things, the things that people do in the dark
I could hear the faintest beat of your heart
Then we did
Now you're older and I look at your face
Every wrinkle is so easy to place
And I only write them down just in case
You should die
Lets take a look at these crows feet, just look
Sitting on the prettiest eyes
Sixty 25th of Decembers
Fifty-nine 4th of Julys
You can't have too many good times, children
You can't have too many lines
Take a good look at these crows feet
Sitting on the prettiest eyes
Well my eyes look like a map of the town
And my teeth are either yellow or they're brown
But you'll never hear the crack of a frown
When you are here
You'll never hear the crack
Of a frown
