yep, it was nature giving them the bird. (for some reason, all the people in the film looked quilty. I guess they knew they had it coming.)

I don't believe you ever found out why the birds were acting that way in the movie. Perhaps the book might have more detail on that, if there was one.

Very true. Film directors have a great habit of leaving little bits out here and there. Only the important bits though.
