Where had he/she come from? What terrible sequence of events lead up to him/ her having to rest on the mat?

The point is, the cat did not HAVE to sit on the mat. He chose to, because his DNA is hot-wired to sit on a mat (flying or otherwise), particularly if it is in front of a fire. The terrible sequence of events that lead him to that mat is immaterial: cats sit on mats.
