Well, they might tell you many reasons but the main one is: image.
i.e. some of the bands started wearing them as an expression of how 'evil' they are (although most of them are probably nice people). It's just an extension of the Black Sabbath/Venom/Am I Evil? heavy metal nonsense.
Of course, some claim to be satanists and are into Anton LaVey, etc. but most of them give this up after a while as it's just a publicity stunt.

some of them do seem pretty serious about Satanism though...the attractive part of it for them, as far as i can see, is the 'rebellion against God' part, which i guess can be generalised to rebellion against all forms of authority. what they appear to fail to grasp is that Satan is not renowned for his embrace of democratic principles, so they seem to be substituting one form of authority for another. as i believe in neither, it doesn't really bother me too much, so long as they confine it to their 'music'.

Do they realise that rebelling against God also means rebelling against love, justice and peace ?

as far as i'm able to tell, love justice and peace aren't high on the average satanist's list of priorities. power seems to be a part of the trip instead. while God promises eternal happiness in heaven, satan promises power here on earth. i'm not an authority, btw, but this is how it seems to me...

Does that imply power over life and death ?

Pretty much, yes.
If you are worried about all these kids being satanists then I wouldn't be.
Many of them may say they are, some of them may even believe it. But few keep it up for more than a couple of years. It's just a rebellious phase (and it annoys people).
Maybe a few actually do something silly like kill an animal, but a few kids have probably always done stuff like that.
