Civilazation is an advanced stage in society development.Society is a group of people joined together for a common purpose.
There has been a debate betwwen The Sumers (sumerians) being the first civilazation on earth, it was the Mesopatamia; or China, being the oldest civilazation.

Civilisation started with the advent of agriculture some 10,000 years ago. If you define society as a conglomerate of people, then society pre-dates civilisation, as foragers lived in social groups.
