Can anyone recommend a really good book on it?

I read an amazing book of french revolution fiction called "The Gods are Thirsty." I forgot the author (and I got it from the library) but the publication date was 1997. Even though it's fiction, the people and events in the book are true. Take it with a grain of salt, though: some of the dates are wrong.

Thanks. I was hoping for a history book, though.

Stendhal's "The Red and the Black."
