it's a cricket term, as is 'stumped'. they're both ways of getting the batsman out. lbw stands for 'leg before wicket', and very approximately, means hitting the batsman's body with the ball when if it hadn't so hit, it would have hit the three little sticks he stands in front of. but the actual laws covering this are very complicated.

I'm out in t' car park startin' me run up heading for the stadium tunnel...all eyes are on the tunnel.. the batsman's thinkin by God this ball might be quick....

I'll leave this til tomorrow morning when I get to the boundary...
