Dear Chessfriends,
Chess is not only a game, it is an old game with a history and some
traditions, and some , you can call it ethics. Some special
sportsmansship. Normally if you have lost a pawn and have no
compensation for it, the position is lost, and there is no need for
continueing the game. And ofcourse if you have lost an officer .....
Please show good sportsmansship, understand the spirit of chess,
GIVE UP and ask for a new game.
Regards, and I do fathom your request, as others have likewise
mentioned the same thing. However, I must disagree and offer the
other side of the coin (except for those who refuse to play and let the
game timeout) I've lost a pawn without IMMEDIATE compensation,
even sacrificed an "officer" to obtain position, and I may just want to
see how the game plays out. With due respect, I'm not a horrible
player, and I have overcome many losses of pieces to make a
challenging end of game. I may lose, and I may win, but I don't
consider a loss of pawn death, and an unrequited loss of bishop or
knight isn't the end of the world either...
Besides, I still want to learn middle game and end game tactics.
Currently, I'm in a position with an opponent or two that I know is
futile, I will probably resign next move, but I can always hope that,
unless I'm playing v. a grandmaster, someone will make a mistake
and I can recover.
And, also, out of deferrence to my opponent, I do like to engage in
conversation, although recently I have been mostly silent because of
limited time to be able to make a move.
Respectfully,

docafrica, My initial gut reaction to your statement is, "ARE YOU JOKING OR ARE YOU TOTALLY NUTS?" However, out of respect, I won't say that! Maybe you're so good that if anyone should ever be a single pawn down to you, he is toast. If so my hat is off to you sir and I hope that I may someday approach that level of skill.
I agree... I know this is an extreme example but should I have
resigned in this game?

I have also lost despite being two 'officers' up...
With such mixed abilities on this site sometimes anything can
happen! 😉
However, I do agree that there are times when hopeless situations are
dragged out unecessarily.
Rhymester
I agree with Rhymaster. Everyone has different skiils and we are all human, thus we can make mistakes. I should could of
checked mated this guy really early in the game, but missed it. And close to the end, I thought I was moving my queen when it
was bishop and missed another checkmate (I was playing at 2 am in the morning...a bad habit).

Just because one is down pieces or position doesn't mean certain defeat.

Originally posted by docafricaYou seem to think that any given game is YOUR personal intellectual property. You have to remember that the game also belongs to your opponent, and it's his game too. No game can be all it can be without leaving the players to finish their game the way they see fit. So if you don't like the way they play, then just don't play them again, simple as that. But as *least* have some respect for your opponent to let them play their own game while the game is still on. THIS is the true chess ethics and sportsmanship you speak of. To denigrate your opponent for not resigning simply because you wish him to is the ultimate in your ego inflation and disrespect for him and his game. If his style of play SO infuriates you or insults you so much, then simply don't play him again. I'm sure that being deprived of the opportunity to interact with someone of your chess-god-like status would be ample incentive for them to see the light and change their ways...

People are not all of the same ability. Not only does that mean that down at my level people are perfectly capable of winning a game after being behind (because their opponent makes mistakes), it also means that we need to learn. And we learn by playing games - including when we are losing.
Enjoy your rarified world of perfect chess. I'll stay down here in strugglesville thank you very much.
