You're right. It's a quote that sounds familar to almost everybody. But it doesn't appear to have been in anything.

People believe they've heard it in all sorts of places; The Simpsons, Seinfeld etc.

Thought so. People used to believe it was in Bottlerockets...and The Simpsons...it is in the Hitchhikers book, though, but not the movie.
