A triumvirate of fellows (three blokes) walk into a hotel in order to pass the night there. The receptionist tells them that one room is €30 for the night. This is handy as there are three men, so they each decide to pay €10 a piece. They each pay a crisp €10 note and head to their rooms. A few minutes later, the receptionist realizes her mistake as there is a special on rooms that week and they are only €25 a night. She gathers the five euros, five one-euro coins, and gives them to the bellboy to return to the men. As the bellboy is riding the lift, he thinks "There are three men and five euros, they'll never be able to split it equally. Plus I'm barely on minimum wage as it is. I'll just keep two, and call it the tip they didn't give me earlier, and then they can have three to split equally." He keeps two euros for himself and gives each of the men one euro in return. But hold on: You have three men who paid 10 euros a piece and received one euro coin back....this means they each paid nine euros. The bellboy slyly kept two euros for himself. So, nine x 3 equals 27 plus the 2 euros the bellboy kept equals 29 euros --- what happened to the missing coin??

€9 is the price paid by the three men so it's a different factor and can't be added to the phsyical amount of money the bellboy has in his back pocket.
Each man has €1 (total of €3) the Bellboy has €2 and the Receptionist has €25 which adds up to the original €30.

I was thinking more along the lines of €25 being the price of the room, the fellows paid €9 each, which is €27, which includes the €2 "tip" to the theiving and soon-to-be-sacked bellboy. You just can't find the help these days.
Which leaves the fellows with €3 which they think will cover the packet of dry-roasted peanuts they opened from the mini-bar. Turns out they thought wrong...
