...ended today as all the branches closed for the last time; another victim of the changing commercial landscape.

I remember the old wooden counters as a child, and I also worked for Woolies years ago. It is a little sad to see the brand dissappear from the high street. Most of thier business has been drifting to Tesco or ASDA no doubt.

I wonder who else will go under in the new year?

Our Woolworths here in Australia is going strong, they made all the right marketing decisions and are just getting bigger and better every year. Must admit I liked the old wooden counters too. Remember those pneumatic-tube gadgets some of them had to shift change around? The concealed ones they have in the supermarkets now aren't half as interesting.

Both Woolworth's amd Woolco are long gone in these parts.
