Just because you are good at something doesn't mean you can't fall for easy tricks. If everyone you played against used that trick, then you would be used to it and counter it, as you move up, less people would try it.
Pretty silly to not notice that though, but they must have been pretty good in other games to get so far.

😛Recently I went to the victorian Chess open and i played a couple of games against rapid rated 2132 and he fell for somethin a 5 year old will fall for. I reckon these people should learn how to play before they enter statewide competitions.
