A: The word "Great" resulted from the need to distinguish Britain from Brittany in France, so it was referred to by the French-speaking ruling class as Brittanie Majore*** as opposed to the other mostly Celt-inhabited Brittanie to the south west, on mainland Europe. The original Britons, like the Bretons, were Celts and, although they were displaced, massacred and absorbed etc., they did lend their name to the land controlled by their conquerors and their conquerors' conquerors).
