Think of a number...

Think of a number between one and ten. Multiply it by two. Add ten. Divide by two. Subtract the number you thought of... your answer's five.

Hardly a mathematical breakthrough, nor that facetitious. Sustained thought is strenuous, often painful. Simple is what most posters want.

Why only between one and ten? It works for any number, even 1,000,000. Even zero.

Multiply any whole number by nine. Add the digits of the result. That number itself will be evenly divisible by nine.

Yes, Andy, of course that nitpicky fact is true. Just trying to keep things in line with the premise of simplicity, so the math is easy to do.

Yes, GBS. Today, the first day of December in the year of our Lord, 2008, we are giving out the all time popular RHP El Cabooso Award.

Got your number, New England Pal, and have had it for quite a while... certainly long before I accepted your invitation today and picked zero.
