I've looked it up in my dictionary:

n. & v.
1. Words and phrases, ... etc. used in special senses by some class or profession, cant, (racing, thieves', theatrical, schoolboy, etc. ,slang) .
2. v.i. & t. Use abusive language (to); ~'ing-match, prolonged exchange of insults.

<< ~íng-match, prolonged exchange of insults. >>

To have an exchange of insults it is necessary for both parties involved to use abusive and insulting language.
I understand that you do not want to take sides in this case, and that is in my view a very respectable position in order to avoid an escalation of the problem. However it does not serve the matter while trying to de-escalate the problem, we are loosing by the bye contact with what really happened.
I myself showed my teeth to four persons, who, in my opinion were crossing the lines of civil behaviour. Abusive and insulting language was a part of that crossing the lines. Another part was the in my view unacceptable treatment of a child in the forums, expressing his or her views on a subject. I opened a thread called "A Little Fued" to make clear that there is, again in my view, not a place in the normal forums to go about in the matter that was performed by those four persons.
I on occasion threw the gauntlet down at two adult persons of whom I thought that they knew their way with words, in order to prevent an uneven fight. I challenged them to continue their non- civil behaviour in a place that was clearly defined as a free haven for such conduct. My intentions of course were not to encourage them in such a behaviour but I was trying to stop this kind of behaviour. I did so by showing them my teeth in a sometimes harsh but always in a, I hope, not to be misunderstood way. I took care however not to cross the lines of decency and in my view I did not use slang in the above mentioned meaning of using abusive language. Therefore in my opinion it is not entirely correct to use the term slanging match, because it takes at least two opposite parties to use offensive and insulting language.

My intentions are that we on RHP can express our viewes in the forums without being afraid that we might be confronted with abuse or insult, be it in a very direct or in a conceiled way.
My belief is that the vast majority of people do not mind others to discuss the things they are interested in, but they dó mind the way some people use methods that are clearly not acceptable to the vast majority on this wonderful site.

I hope you don't mind my reaction to and my remarks about your above post.

"I did so by showing them my teeth in a sometimes harsh but always ...... etc. " IvanH.

Of course I did not choose the correct word here, or did I ?
I meant a word more like stern, but I don't think that word fits in either, or am I being too sensitive now. I just don't know. Giving a reprimande comes closer to my intentions I guess.
