My question is, why does anyone care how many there are? Counting them and classifying them is a prerequisite to treating them as third-class citizens, and I mean even more so than is done already. The only question should be "Can they do the job?" Neither orientation nor identification predetermines this.

The alien species that are here now, some of them are genderless.. that's why they want humans to be more like them.. so we will be ready to accept them when the y reveal themselves..
