Time outs.

Should we not have an agreement about taking time outs?
If I was in an over- the- board game, and someone's flag fell,I count
that as at the end of the game.
If someone has a reason not to play, then allowances can be
made,holidays etc.,but I would expect a minimum of courtesy,when I
have not been able to make moves i've told my apponents in
advance, and nobody has timed me out.I have timed people out in the
past when they stopped playing in a lost game.
I have a situation now where I can take a time out,and
tomorrow, maybe the second game of the set.I just checked when this
guy last played any moves:13,06,02.but I noticed two things,1)
someone has already taken the time out against him,and 2)he takes
time outs himself.
The point is,it's simple to keep people updated.see Tom's post to
Marc, see the posts when John went into hospital.I would hate to click
that button to find out later it was a genuine case.

lyn...is this a tourney game? If so..you know what to do...if not...then
it is up to you.

Remember when someone agrees to play you they agree to a certain
time frame...one of the reason why I will not play a 3 day...things
come up.

If this person never gave you a reason why they would not be
moving...I would throw one more reminder then if nothing
tomorrow..drop the hammer.

That is what I always do. Just my thoughts.

Dave,it isn't a tornament game.But what if I hammered him,and then
he turned up being a victim of air trafick controllers?

Lyn, if you have doubts, you can email your opponent from within
your game. For the rest, I agree with Dave on this. Sin.

Once again...it's the breaks..if my mom was sick and I had to go to
Kansas for two weeks...or even a few days...I would let all know
through my games as well as through the forum...if for some unknown
reason I am late...then either the people respect what I have told
them or they choose not to. I entered into a contract when I started
the game on the move T.O. and I have to respect that...so do they.

Sometimes you just need to do what has to be done....but once
again...it is your game...your decision.

Me...no warning...no reason..oh well...see ya next game.

I state right in my profile that I take time limits seriously-- if you time-
out on a move, I claim the win, UNLESS you have given a reason,
either in the game or the forum. If you give me a reason, even a
lame one, I tend to be lenient. But like Dave said, when the game
started, both players entered into a contract. You don't jump up in
the middle of an OTB game and say, "Hey, stop my clock, will ya? I
want to run down to the store to see if the new issue of Guns and
Ammo came in yet." (Well, maybe if they read Guns and Ammo, you
cut them some slack, but you get my drift...) And if there is one
thing that irks the hell out of me, it is when someone simply stops
moving in a game that they have clearly lost. Just resign like a
gentleman/woman, for heaven's sake... But I'll admit, I've won some
games by t.o. that I would surely have lost if my opponent had moved
in a timely fashion. Tough break for them, I say.

Linda,
As someone pointed out a long time ago, I have taken over 150
timeouts at Red Hot Pawn. I'm more lenient now than I used to be.
When to claim a timeout is up to you. I have several I could claim
right now, but they have become my friends and I wont claim against
them unless they don't move in a month or somewhere in that time
frame.

I have had two recent situations around t-o. One the other day with
vaknso, but he was playing under another name. I was not sure if it
was him, but I asked his son whom I happened to be playing and he
asked me to hold off. No problem, but multiple nicks can be
confusing. I guess what I'm saying is that having known relationships
helps with determining what you want to do. The other situation is
where my opponent died. Probably the only way I would win I might
add, though the game was even at the time. I let the "claim win"
stand for about a week, but it was more disturbing to me to have it
staring at me every day as a reminder and I felt the need for closure
mattered more. Kirk

lyn;
I'd argue that anything beyond the set time limit is courtesy "above
and beyond", regardless of the situation. If the situation for your
opponenet is truly dire, then a timeout in a correspondence chess
game will be a trivial concerns. If the situation is not dire, then letting
you know ahead of time would have been a reasonble courtesy on
their part.
Also, if they claim t/o's themselves, then absolutely no reason for you
not to; they obviously know the rules.
Deciding either way is valid, don't sweat it. The advantage of taking
the timeout is of course two fold - ya get the win! AND you no longer
have to worry about whether you should take the timout, as the goose
is now already cooked. If you don't take the time out, you are a
courteous person, but then again you will have the same question
tomorrow. I actually just took a t/o for that reason; I got tired of
wondering if they were coming back.

whether or not to claim is surely up to each person in each situation.
I've just spent 2 weeks travelling for work(without warning), and could
rarely get on line to move - noone timed me out and I'm grateful.

Anyway, if it's a game you are enjoying, where's the problem in letting
it sit? If it's a game that someone's abandoned because they've lost
or got bored, then claim away.

Surely it doesn't hurt to ignore the game for a few weeks?

Just to thank you all for taking time out to help.
Up-date is I gave him time out +24 hours, then took both games.
