I'd like to thanks all those who were cool enough not to time me out while I was away (with my vacation setting on). As a community service announcement, here's a list of those who obviously felt that their precious rating needed boosting. Beware, these guys will NOT heed your vacation setting:

Living Legend (twice) yes, he of the constant, significant-content-free forum postings

coa4u
Gribble
Desert Fox
LEE5631 (thrice)
Gardner

It's got me to thinking that it would be great to have a register of players who explicitly state their policy on vacation timeouts, use of books, databases etc. then, when deciding who to play against, one could consult this register. players who were on record as saying they would never timeout someone on vacation would be struck off if they did so. in effect, it could function as a list of 'trustable' opponents...does anybody have any thoughts about this?

I like that idea! I don't use anything when I play, not even my brain 😉! I do not claim wins when people have their vacation setting on. I don't find that fair.

I will only claim games when people are on vacation if they say they don't mind. Unlike the following people:

randomperson who says he is trying to extend our game so he can claim it when I go on holiday in August. 😠

Yeah, I understand that you claimed a win on me when I was in Florida because I gave you (and everyone else I was playing) special permission to T/O me, because I'm still trying to kill all my MAP of the month games from last month. I'M SICK OF EM 😉!

even after the timeouts, i have still got 103 games going. i've decided i just can't handle anything like this amount, so i hope to gradually cut back to about 50...

Don't be stupid, I was winning both and they were clan games. If you were winning, I wouldn't have timed you out, nor would I do that if your rating was higher.

If you think you were winning both games, perhaps you ought go back and look at them more closely. You were in a slightly worse position in your game as white, and your advantage in the other was minimal. So it wasn't that you timed them out because the games were in effect over already, but rather because they were tough, close games you didn't want to risk finishing. Pretty low, in my opinion.

Olav, this is written in your profile:

I usually take take time-outs, but I will not if I know you or when you're on vacation.

You should stand by your word.

He posted the following in a discussion of tournament timeouts:

"I think that when someone asks someone not time him out and he puts his vacation setting on...you shouldn't do it..."

I guess going back on your word is easier on the ego than a potential loss to a ~1300 player.

Cheers to that sentiment. I absolutely will not time someone out if they are on vacation - and I will rarely do so even if they aren't unless they're obviously losing the games badly.

Lee5631 timed me out while I was on vacation in a game that was almost 100% even - I guess getting his rating up is more important than having a fun game of chess.

Come on people, is your rating that important to you? And isn't it more important to try and have fun in your games, and maybe learn something?

I agree. I'm feeling a bit guilty here, because I timed out jot a few days ago. I had many more games than I like at the time, and it didn't look as though he was moving soon. I voiced my apologies rather profusely, though.
