Maybe you should visit
www.tinyurl/howtomakeitsmaller/shortening/makingiteasierforyou/%£$£?/krypton/abbreviation/whyitworks.com
where all will be explained.
If that doesn't work for you then you are just not meant to know.

Basically, it shortens the url so it fits easily into forums and IMs etc.
eg, that address[?] above would be changed from www.tinyurl/howtomakeitsmaller/shortening/makingiteasierforyou/%£$£?/krypton/abbreviation/whyitworks.com
to

Personally I hate it when people use tinyurl on public msg boards.
It is too easy to hide "bad" links, ie: content I DO NOT want to pull up.
IE: I could say, "Bobby Fischer announces that he is going to play against a WGM" and give a tinyurl link. That link could actually link to tubgirl or goatse.cx and I would have no idea until I had clicked on it.
Am I the only one that looks at the links and judges their worth prior to clicking?

I use it often exactly for the purpose of hiding the url name. Sometimes a joke is ruined if people can see the name of the file beforehand.
Originally posted by tmetzlerI would assume anyone who did that would be immediately banned.

I've just seen it abused too many times on msg boards, and I just like being able to see the actual url before clicking. But to each his own. As a result, I hardly ever click on a tinyurl link.
