what are the benefits of joinig a clan? I'm new here and am interested in using more of this sites resources. How does one know if joining a clan is beneficial, and if so, then which one??

Don't know about "beneficial", but certainly fun.

Many to choose from, go with one with similar interests.

In my opinion, the main benefit of joining a clan is that it makes it very easy to get games against players with a similar rating / playing strength. Then there's the social aspect - some clans have very active private forums, some play clan tournaments, some help each other with their chess etc. Playing in the clan leagues can also be a lot of fun, but not all clans play in the leagues.

As for choosing a clan, there are several things you might want to consider. Many clans have a topic (e.g. a certain chess opening) or are looking for a certain group of players (e.g. players from a certain country). If you want to play in the leagues, you'll have to see if the clan does that. Different clans also have different preferred time-out periods, and some only want players who play a lot for the clan, while others prefer not to set up too many challenges. I would read a bit in the clan forums and look through the clan list, and if you see a clan which sounds interesting, contact the clan leader.

Note that you need to subscribe if you want to join a clan.

I strongly recommend In Vino Veritas as by far the most successful clan in 2006 and a bunch of really pleasant players of all levels!! The only difficulty is that, because it is so good, it may be difficult to join (ie there may not be a vacancy at present).

There are many advantages of joining a clan such as chatting about games in private forums, organised consultation games, playing against players you might not have otherwise been able to get on to, etc. You can make yourself available for exciting clan challenges whenever you feel inclined... you can also resign from clan if you don't like it.
We're they may

hmmmm, I didn't even think of 'smack talk', actually... lol...

I was thinking of the other definitions, including 'a smack on the butt' and 'a smack on the lips (or cheek)'...
