My brother has on original RL Osborne freestyle bike with 64-spoke
rims, monster pegs-- the thing is a classic, and it just sits there
gathering dust in my parents' shed. Maybe if Lance DOES win this
year, they will MAKE him ride a Haro next year.
I'm at work-- will move on our game when I get home.

I've already offered to buy it from him, but he is not willing to part
with it. When he was younger, he did some half-pipe stuff, but mostly
flatland freestyle-- the kid was an absolute shredder. And now, at 33,
with a beer gut, he can still hop on that thing and pull a single-handed
cherry-picker, or bunny hop a good four feet in the air, like he had
just ridden yesterday. He went out and bought a NICE new mountain
bike, and has barely used that, either. I own three bikes, myself-- a
Specialized mountain bike which has been modified for urban
commuting (semi-slick tires instead of knobbies, lightweight fenders,
narrowed handlebars, and LOTS of lights for night riding), a Trek road
bike (old school, with downtube shifters) that has had so many
upgrades made to it that I couldn't even begin to figure out how much
it's worth now; and a 1963 Hawthorne Hercules, an English 3-speed
that I spend over 100 hours restoring to its original condition, rode it
like that for a month or two, and then stripped it down to the bare
bones, installed track-style bars, added a black seat with embroidered
flames, and painted it flat black, so now it looks like a two-wheeled
version of a circa-late-50's '32 Ford hot rod. All I need to complete
my collection is a Schwinn Stingray, like the one I learned to ride on.
Haven't owned a car in 11 years.

Hey Tim, would you be interested in joining my adventure race team if
I need a member?...the next race is September 8th in Hartford,
Connecticut. It's Trail biking, trail running , and kayaking
(sp?)...along the way there are "events" or obstacles that you have to
navigate as a team. They don't tell you the distances until the night
before the race, and you don't know what obstacles are in store until
you encounter them (you're given an instruction booklet at the
starting line! It's manageable. The distances are anywhere from 5-8
miles running, 10-15 biking and 1-3 kayaking. I think I have my
team together, but I'm looking for reserves.
Let me know if you're interested...anyone else for that matter too.
Thanks,
Franklin
I appreciate the offer-- but if you had ever met me in person, you'd
realize what a bad candidate I would make. First of all, I can't run-- I
get shin splints running after a bus! Played soccer (football to the rest
of the world) in high school and college, and must have done a little
too much high-impact damage to my legs. So, cycling is the only
physical sport I can really do without pain. Also, I may be able to ride
LONG distances (I've done 90-mile rides, have yet to do my first
century), but I don't ride all that fast, because I also happen to have
a nasty addiction to cigarettes. So, as much as I may be a hardcore
bike guy, I am FAR from being an athlete.
I see I have a move to make against you, so I'm off to see to it.
