Transferring domain?

I have my own domain coming up for renewal. Currently it's with Domaindirect which I don't think is the cheapest (US$34.99 one year and $52.50 for two). I only use it for forwarding of e-mail. What are my alternatives and how does one go about transferring a domain? Naturally, the domaindirect site is not very helpful.

Sounds like an expensive way to just forward emails.

When I did it, I just found my new host and told them what my domain name was. They took it from there. I can't remember if I paid them any extra fees for it though.

Yeah, but it's *my* family name domain that no one else is going to get hold of.

what buffalobill.com? 😵

it should be possible to simply register with a new hosting company and tell them you wish to transfer the domain to them - they will usually do all the rest of the work.

[edit - as long as it coming up for renewal that is]
