Has anyone else played this game? It's quite old now, maybe they're working on a sequel. Basically, you are the leader of a small Caribbean island. Although it's quite tongue-in-cheek at times, it's more realistic than, say, SimCity or Civilisation, because your hold on power is not absolute: you can be ousted by losing an election, or by a coup, popular uprising or a foreign invasion, requiring a fairly ruthless approach to politics on the higher difficulty levels (using local bishops to brand my political opponents 'heretics' is my favourite 🙂.) In fact, I've been told that on the hardest setting, the first election is a fine balancing act: if you exploit the workers too much, they'll vote against you or even rise up against the government. If you treat them too well, the US will invade - because you've been too mean to the island's capitalists and too generous to its communists! (The game starts in 1950.) All this is while trying to make enough money to keep things afloat, and even embezzling money into your Swiss bank account for your retirement.
PS They are working on a sort of sequel, in which you get to be a pirate king!

Originally posted by AcolyteI saw this game in a shop in Sydney and thought about buying it but it was fairly expensive (about $60 if I remember right) and I bought something for about half the price in the end. It looked interesting though.

Originally posted by Bobla45No, I haven't played correspondence Diplomacy, though I might try it when I go home in a week's time. Have you played it? I imagine it plays a bit differently to face-to-face, because you can't tell who's talking to whom.

Originally posted by AcolyteWhen I played it, many years ago, like 25...🙂 there was a central control that you mailed your moves to. You mailed your "discussions" to the various players for a designated period of time, and then you mailed your moves to the central control, who in turned announced the moves and play went accordingly. This was all done in a time when there was no e-mail, I imagine in this day and age the game could be played with much less inconvenience, one control point, 7 polayers, think about it, I think it would be fun!

I started to play diplomacy online 2 months ago ... and it is much fun (being an Austrian I play it in german language) ... You'll never know who is sending whom e-mails and this makes it very hard to decide whom you can trust (well at the moment I play Austria Hungary which is always hard ...)
But it is an excellent game

Tropico2 is indeed the simulation of a pirates island ...
