Fjord, I hope you do not mind copying your post into this new thread. The question you raised is indeed a very important question that will shape the future of the international community.
Fjord: The rather urgent question for me is how you can deal with a situation where one country can overpower the rest of the world. How can you arrive at decisions that reflect the thoughts and feelings of the majority of the world population? And how can a majority respect the wishes of minorities? Or do we think that our welfare and wellbeing can be best guaranteed with one super power that dictates war and peace? I think this is an important issue for people in and outside the US.

I will make a start with some practical suggestions.
I favor the idea that de HQ of the UN will be moved from NY to a more neutral area. It is not smart to have it situated in the country that dominates the world policy.
Another thing that should be reformed is the Security Council. It is out-dated. The present members, US, China, Russia, France, and GB are a reflection of the situation just after WW II. I would suggest a division in continents, like North America, South America, Africa, Europe (including Turkey and Russia), North Asia, South Asia (including Australia) and maybe a separate vote for the US.
The possibilities of vetoing should be reduced. A possibility could be that you only can veto when you have 2 votes against.
The UN should have a world police force for calamities. It is bizarre as it is now. Every time they have to beg for support. If the US is serious in her feelings that she shouldn't be the world policeman, she should stimulate this process.

Does it matter? Is not the world just a convenient place for the human animal to stage it's tragedies?
The US is top dog right now, but that always changes. Next will be China.
Then maybe Indonesia.
Then Europe. Then Asia. Or vice-versa.
That puts us a thousand years into the future. Does it matter? No. We are all just humans. What difference? None.

It is in that sense that "nothing matters". If you see the valiant SS officer executing jews as the patriot then "nothing matters" because you are the fool. If you see valiant parents trying to raise their children as decent beings then "nothing matters" because you care too much. Human society doesn't care. They love to protect murderers like Sadaam more than they care for the right of parents not to be killed by him.
After the feast...
I don't believe the human race will see that. I truly believe we will be destroyed in our infancy by the universe before we ever come close to the feast of the harvest of our labors.
What a joy I am. I know.
Originally posted by StarValleyWyYou are right. Everything is temporarily. To start with our own life's. And that is true for the human race as whole too. Even the universe is not eternal. So why don't we stay in bed, forget about life in the outer world, and why are we writing these posts to each other? Why? What is it that drives us? Please, keep barking.
