Right. I've downloaded zone alarm - hope I'm not to late 😕

Andrew........

oooh errr! Installed it and logged on to RHP... almost straight away I got this message:

ZoneAlarm blocked traffic to port 17300 on your machine from port 4500 on a remote computer whose IP address is 80.50.60.39. This communication attempt may have been a port scan, or simply one of the millions of unsolicited commercial or network control messages that are routinely sent out over the Internet. Such unsolicited messages are often called Internet background noise.

So how do you get to know if IP 80.50.60.39 is a 'baddy' ?

Want to hear what an INSANE IDIOT I am?!?

So the other day, a spyhunter ad popped up and I figured it was about time to get something like that. So I start downloading it. While it was downloading, I had another popup, hotbar. Looked pretty nifty and I was bored, so I started downloading that too. So I get everything downloaded, play with hotbar a little bit, then run my first spyhunter scan. The ONLY spyware that was on my computer was, can you guess? Correct, HOTBAR!

It gets better...

So I find out that hotbar is spyware, but I can't remove it with the freeware I got, have to buy the full version which I can't afford at the moment. So I have to leave it for now because I am very uncomfortable about messing with the registry myself. I keep in mind that I have spyware on my machine and vow to be careful with what I do until I get it off. So I get my W-2s yesterday and am so gung-ho about getting my return, that I get onto Turbo Tax and file my taxes! Social Security Number, everything.

Sometimes it floors me what an idiot I can be!!😳😕

Hope you enjoyed my little anecdote...

Rhymester,

I wouldn't worry too much - ZA has blocked the connection. You probably see this many times during a session from lots of different IP addresses - some are innocent some are not. If it bothers you, ZA can be configured to stop popping up these messages and just block in the background.

Just think before you were running ZA you had no idea this was even happening!

Here is a couple of *possibilities* (I stress possibilities):

1. I did a quick search and port 17300 and found it has been used by the Kuang2 virus which install backdoor listening on this port [http://www.dshield.org/port_report.php?port=17300]. So 80.50.60.39 could have been looking for a PC which had been infected. You should also remember that 80.50.60.39 may have been compromised itself and the owner have no idea your computer was scanned.
2. It could have been something else and completely innocent network traffic.

Out of interest 80.50.60.39 appears to be part of a block of address assigned to Polish Telecom ;-)

Cheers
Laz

I recommend configuring those popup messages out - they are really nothing for you to worry about, as long as you have Zonealarm blocking them. To turn the alerts off, doble click the zonealarm icon in your taskbar, click "alerts & logs" in the window that opens up, and set "Alert Events Shown" to "off". Also, you might want to check "Firewall" in the same windown, to see that your security settings are at "high" - I think that that is the default, but you might want to check it anyway.
