I grew up in school during the late 60s and 70s; probably as you did, and it was tough at times for most pupils. I can’t imagine what it’s like for kids nowadays with texting and social media bullying.
@diver saidYou hear, what seems to me, a lot kids resorting to suicide due to online bullying/extortion these days. Now that may be that with all the new tech we just have ways of discovering them but in my day (growing up in the 50s it, suicide was very rare. The only one, close to me, was a school mate who became pregnant at 12/13 and hung herself in her garage. 😢
Awful.

@Great-Big-Stees saidI can't remember hearing of anybody committing suicide at that time in my. Bullying existed but those were different days, families being more present, and no anonymous life on the internet, no private telephones, only one stationary telephone shared by the family. Schools were supervised by teachers with authority and the headmaster was obeyed by everybody.

i have four nicknames that have a meaning for me
rookie, or rookie54
nasrudin
snake oil
reverend coolshades
i will not reveal in this space what these names mean to me
i would most enjoy listening to the fertile imaginations of those who think they may know
A neighbor came to Nasrudin, asking to borrow his donkey.
"It is out on loan," the teacher replied. At that moment, the donkey brayed loudly inside the stable.
"But I can hear it bray, over there."
"Whom do you believe," asked Nasrudin, "me or a donkey?"
i love the stories told of nasrudin
there are hundreds of them
and they will teach you, whether you wish to learn or not
Once Nasruddin went to a formal reception and seated himself on the most elegant chair.
Seeing this Chief of guard approached him and said, “Sir, these seats are reserved for Guests of Honor.”
Nasruddin confidently replied, “Oh, i am more than mere guest of Honor.”
the Chief questioned, “Oh so you are a diplomat.”
Again Nasruddin replied, “No, I am far more than a diplomat.”
the Chief questioned again, “Really?? So are you a minister??”
“No, no.. I am more than that.”, said Nasruddin.
“OK..! Then you must be the Sultan himself.” Said the Chief sarcastically.
Again Nasruddin quickly responded, “Higher than that..!”
the Chief got angry and said, “What? You are higher than the Sultan?? Nobody is higher than the Sultan!”
Nasruddin smirked and said, “Now you have it.. I am Nobody.”
once upon a time
with a belly full of wine
nasrudin was crawling around in the street
his friend came by and asked of him what was the matter
"i have lost my keys and i cannot go home", cried nasrudin
"i will help you find them!" said his friend
"do you remember where you had them last?"
"over there, in the alley" said nasrudin
"but why are you looking for them here, out in the street?"
"the light is much better here"
Nasrudin returned to his village from the imperial capital, and the villagers gathered around to hear what had passed.
"At this time," said Nasrudin, "I only want to say that the King spoke to me."
All the villagers but the stupidest ran off to spread the wonderful news. The remaining villager asked, "What did the King say to you?"
"What he said -- and quite distinctly, for everyone to hear -- was `Get out of my way!'"
The simpleton was overjoyed; he had heard words actually spoken by the King, and seen the very man they were spoken to.
@Arkturos saidMullah Nasrudin, standing on the bank of a river, watched as a dog came to drink.
No it isn't!
The dog saw itself in the water and immediately began to bark.
It barked and barked all morning and into the afternoon,
until it was foaming at the mouth.
Finally, dying of thirst, the dog fell into the river,
whereupon it quenched its thirst, climbed out, and happily walked away.
Nasrudin said, "Thus I realized all my life I had been barking at my own reflection."
@rookie54 saidNot that I'm one to follow orders, but maybe for the reasons you have hinted at, I sometimes find it difficult to settle on a username when it comes to things like web forums.

In real life, I've never really had a nickname that I know of. Our family moved a bunch of times when we were kids, so I was often the new kid at school (and the stranger from elsewhere, I guess) -- therefore never staying long enough anywhere for any observers to comment upon any standout traits.
Regarding the moving around, maybe every life has its pros and cons (e.g., whether one lives in the same town all one's life or moves around during the formative years).
There's a common abbreviation for my given name, but only my late Dad and a late faculty member from the Chicago area ever used it. It's a name I would hope close friends and lovers would use, but that hasn't happened so far.
@rookie54 saidi relent, and expose myself
snake oil
reverend coolshades
i will not reveal in this space what these names mean to me
avert thine eyes
imagine if you will
a big top revival tent
a choir singing and clapping, dogs barking, lil ole ladies selling last year's cookies, the village idiot parking cars
there is a preacher that runs this show
and sometimes he's worth his salt and sometimes he is not
the preacher with the angel on his shoulder, the one who will go that extra kilometer, listen attentively when she leaves you, maybe even bail you out of the drunk tank
that guy is reverend coolshades
but the other preacher, the one with the pointy tailed devil on his shoulder, the guy who will tell the troopers exactly where yer hiding as he passes the donation plate
that guy is snake oil
i have had too dang much fun assuming these personalities as i preach to the downtrodden and the destitute
and sometimes i change mid-sermon
depending on how the spirit leads me
@Great-Big-Stees saidI was a school bully ,over 6ft in first year seniors, I butted heads with everyone........I am nice now though lol.
