an opponent was on vacation with flag showing, but was timedout anyway - i didn't realize this was going to happen till it was too late. this is about to happen again with someone else. is there anything that can be done to prevent the timeout from happening?

Were the games in tournaments or not? If they were in tournaments the timeouts are automatic which is why I have long argued for 8, 15 and 22 day timeouts but I was told that an opponent would get a day's grace before being automatically timed-out.

The vacation flag is an excuse for anyone. The TO rule should still apply.

At least the time out status stops people making moves in ANY of their games not just those they might want to drag their feet in.

Let us put it in to little compartments.
Time outs are usefull if you win a game and the loser does not reply.
That is technical time out.
Grey areas exist and no one will take up this challenge.
It is about moral judgement.(Of course you always knew you were winning).
My view is hit the claim win as soon as it is there.
Not my problem.
I am here to play moves.
