That's probably the translator's fault. I don't know how it is called in the original, but in German it's "Tetrapilutomie". "Pilos" is "felt", which makes at least more sense than "pylos" = "gate". I don't know why Eco didn't call it "tetratrichotomy".
According to the site you sent me to, pylos is from the latin pilus for hair.

That's supposed to be part of the joke.

Your latin and greek are obviously far superior to mine.

On the subject of useless academics, the word trivia is derived from the Trivium a medieval course of study at the University of Paris encompassing grammar, rhetoric, and logic.

Ah, thanks. I have read that page a long time ago and had forgotten that bit. 😳

I have also forgotten most of my Latin and classical Greek (I had both in school), but I have dictionaries.

Oh yes. Of course, my idea of fun is probably widely different from yours.

So how come you wanted a challenge so badly against me?

That's a good question. I put together a list of challenges for everyone who attacked me. You got on the list. But in looking over the posts just now, I can't figure out why you were on the list in the first place.

Sorry. But, what the heck, you turned it down anyway.

I play all sorts of people on the site. Most I don't know. It's fun playing someone that you like, but the reality is I most play people I don't know.

In any event, I expect that most, if not all, of the challenges will be turned down.

...well, there is something to be said for risk...when you play someone
you know who doesn't like you there is the risk of loss to them and that adds some fuel to the fire...a friendly game is nice...but to take
down a nasty person is like waiting for the train to arrive with the guys
from the territorial prison who think they are going to take back the town and then they get put back on the return train...i guess you have
to have a delight in justice to want to push the risk...i think it is worth it...

Yeah, it's the classic battle of Good vs. Evil, with me in the Gary Cooper role.

I turned it down because it was an unfair challenge that's why. It doesn't matter if I know the person I'm playing or not as most of the time I don't know them. This is a site that has thousands and thousands of people on it, so it's not very likely you will play people you know very often.
I have not attacked you in any way, but I am guessing that it may be because of the thread you started about cleaning up the forums where some of the people in the same clan as I am, had qiote an arguement with you. I however was away from the site during nearly all of that thread, so played no part in the arguement.

Also I think it is petty that you get your clan leader to set up challenges against people you don't like for you as you know most other leaders will accept wothout giving it a second thought.

yes-but when you start out there is little or no point. take graph theory, and the bridges of Konigsberg. it was just formulated to prove the game couldn't be completed! and now we use it for optimisation...
