I saw this today, and I must say, Steven Spielberg is a genius director. Taking the HG Wells classic into the current time would not be easy, but he has done it well, exceptionally so.
Tom Cruise is at his best in this film, as is Dakota Fanning, although the screaming could have been toned down a bit. The aliens and tripods look fantastic thanks to ILM Studios, and Spielberg even has a nod to Jurassic Park, with Tim Robbins, Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning in a basement with the aliens, akin to the raptor-kitchen scene in JP.
Overall, this movie is excellent and is one of the highlights of the year.

I always liked Spielberg and had him down as my first choice to do LOTR.... bet he wouldn't have cut old Tom Bombadill...

It doesn't sound like it's too close to the book from what I've heard.
I re-read the book a few months ago and the very things I liked about the book seem to have been cut from the film.
I liked it, and it seemed more faithful to the book than the 1953 version does.

But I liked the writing style - staid and victorian - the fact that it was a lone man wandering about in London, etc. and his opinions and sensibilities.

No matter who directs it film can't capture that.
