Thanks to a friend (KJCavalier), i now have an account with freewebs.com , for the purpose of creating a web page. Before i decide if i should go premium, i was wondering if there was a better site to use , and to help piss away my hard earned cash.

Is there better than www.freewebs.com out there ?

Thanks in advance for your help, etc etc etc.

I was going to say that you could just send me your hard-earned cash, but that doesn't seem to be the point of the thread. Does freewebs just give you a domain, or does it help you set up the page as well? I use Dreamweaver for the school website. The only time I tried to use something else was the time I wasted with geocities in the late 90s. Let us see the link when you're done!

Looking at their site, it's pretty much exactly the same package as you'd get with any other 'Free Website' companies.

How much does the Premium service cost and what extra featues does it give?

I was hoping that somewhere in there, i would get the chance to write something wothout having that poxy green leaf bar everywhere, or a better positioning of positioning stuff, or something. Thats what i'm looking for, so thats why i'm hunting for another site.

Fasthosts aren't too shabby for price and features. Here's a link to a demo of their SiteBuilder tool you get with thier package so you can try before you buy.

I'm at school on an ancient Mac with a gerbil inside running on a wheel. When I get home to a real computer, I'll check it out!

If you really want to learn about html and how it works, I'd stay away from a lot of the fancy WYSIWYG page editors. Microsoft's FrontPage for example, inserts all sorts of garbage into your code, and does very little to teach you about the mechanics involved in constructing a page. The way I learned was to go to sites I liked, look at the source code, make modifications and see what happened. It's not difficult to get the feel for it. Once you've done that, you can create your own (original) page borrowing elements you liked from other pages. At that point, you can probably use any of these sites that allow you to upload your html.

Sure, Frontpage is crap, but there are some WYSIWYG editors that work better. I learned to use HTML using these editors first and from there started checking some basics tutorials on the web.

Something like this http://nvu.com/index.php is worth having a look at. Small, easy to install, but still has many features and creates pretty clean HTML.

Sorry but this probably isn't any help but maybe a warning (perhaps other might be able to tell me why this may have happened). I own a few flats in london that I rent out, in previous years they rented themselves i.e. put an ad in the local paper and I would get up to 30 calls in one evening. However as more landlords have enetered the market it's now a lot tougher so I decided to set up a web page which showed photos of the flat's rooms, give details of what the council tax, water charges are, all the room sizes etc i.e. all the info possible. I found a free website called moonfruit. I spent ages collating and inserting the info. When I received notice from one of my tenants I checked the website only to get a response saying something like you do not have a web page here! I guess because it wasn't accessed frequently it was deleted, I didn't loss anything but I did spend a lot of time setting it up. So check the small print on freebies (I did and couldn't see why it happened), anyone know?
