Originally posted by StarrmanYou should buy Can's "Tago Mago", originally released in 1971. Last year, Can's first four albums were remastered and reissued and they couldn't sound any better (unless you have a copy of the original vinyl in mint condition, yeah right).
So, it was pay day yesterday and I'm up for suggestions again. Please include reasons too, rec to the winner.
Can has been receiving critical praise for over 25 years. They are the original avant-garde contemporary rock band, they preceded all trends in rock music, and have influenced countless of musicians and artists even to this day. If you call yourself a fan of rock music then you owe it to yourself to own a least a couple Can records, or else you're just full of sh-t. And since you're a big fan of Zappa and i assume you're a fan of VU, this stuff will be right up your alley.

Did I mention they were German, too?
"Soldier" by Iggy Pop.
Iggy's at his funniest, most acerbic and lovably degenerate on this one. His dark edge also comes out in "Mr. Dynamite," one of my favorite songs in rock. Jangly piano and beautiful reverbed guitar set the stage for this tale of madness. And how can you not like songs with titles like "I'm a Conservative"?
from "I Snub You" :
You are a moron
Im glad to be here
Seeing the sight of you
Smelling the smell of you
You're the most deplorable glaring example
Of a degenerate narcotic influence
My seething hate is driving me nuts
What can I do to obliterate you
I snub you
I really hope youre one of a kind
You dont care who you brutalize
You are a bully plain and simple
You are a beast you are a pig
Youve been a pig for long enough now
Im making my move
Im making an end to you
I snub you
And when I snub
I really snub
I snub you finally, forever
Is she really going out with him?
Now is the time
Im playing my date
Ill give you a mouthful you cant swallow
Unquestionably Ive been lacking in taste
Youre being cheerful but not for long
Your mum and dad they sure made a mess
Youre going to look like watercress
When I snub you
He snubs you
We snub you
Dogs snub you
I snub you

It's all in good fun. 😀 Great stuff for FTW days!
Anyway, I recommend it highly. If you did buy it and wasn't satisfied, I'll buy it back from you plus postage (no handling though 😉 ).
Album: "Lifted"
Artist: Bright Eyes
You can hear some of Bright Eyes' work at the website of my local indy radio station, KEXP. Here's the link:

Make sure you listen to the song "I Must Belong Somewhere". It is unreleased so far, and an instance of songwriting at its absolute finest.
Also, I've just recently been turned on to an incredible Colorado band called Devotchka. You can hear some streaming audio at their website:

I've just purchased their most recent album, "How it Ends", and it is insanely good.
Originally posted by bbarrbbarr, you've ruined it. I got into Bright Eyes a few months ago, and think his stuff is superb (note that I mentioned Oberst in the best song thread). However, since all of my opinions are derived from yours, apparently the exhiliration I feel at hearing him snarl 'Let's fvck it up, boys, make some noise!' is completely derivative 😛.

BTW, NPR has a streaming concert of Bright Eyes in their archives right now, and it's quite good.
Originally posted by bbarrPBS also aired one of his concerts a couple months ago. His back-up band was nothing to shake a stick at either. Jim James from My Morning Jacket and M. Ward were both part of the performance.
