Hello everybody!
I only recently found the site, and it was love at first sight. Now Ï've become a pawnstar! (Thinking of how that sounds, am I the only one who finds that title a bit... um... dodgy?)
I've had a couple of good games here, and found that my provisional rating is shooting through the roof after just two victories - and I've got at least a third in the making. I don't know my
eal rating, but I'm not THAT good! I feel almost like a criminal prancing around with a 1700+ rating! :/
Well, I'm sure that what comes up, must come down... maybe I should just enjoy it while it last. Anyway, does anyone know how these ratings are calculated? Or maybe it's magic. 🙂

Don't worry too much. For the first 20 games you have a provisional rating which fluctuates wildly. The full details are in the first post of this thread:

You've got an interesting idea too, but I presume that the d4/e4 ban only concerns clan games? Or does one take a holy oath to forever forsake softcore? 🙂 I happen to quite like my d4 - but I'm always willing to expand my horizons...

Paul, I'd be very interested in adding a hardcore status to my pawnstaryness. I'm going on a few weeks vacation on the 22nd, and I think I should use the next couple of weeks becoming a less of a newbie on the site 🙂 - if you'll have me, I'll request membership after I return.
I'm going on this backpacking trip with a friend who's at about the same level in chess as me, so I've got an opportunity to practice my hardcore opening repertuare... as it's stands, it's yet a bit underdevelloped... 🙂
