Vodka martini's for me and mine. I'm two shots of Absolute ( if you have to ask go to another forum ) in a pitcher full of ice. Add one shot of sweet vermouth and stir quietly. Strain slowly into the coldest martini glass imaginable and drop in a maraschino cherry. Nothing else touches it for taste, and pure hit.

PS Edit: Hub's has his with dry vermouth and an olive with a poofy slice of lemon on the rim. I ask you......?
PSS Edit: If you're wondering what the significance of the cherry is, you nibble it whilst waiting for a refill.
Originally posted by skeeterI concur Vodka it is but please it must be either an olive or in a pinch a cocktail onion no cherries or lemon.

Originally posted by Great Big SteesAgree about the lemon, and with the dry vermouth ( colourless) the olive is appropriate, both for taste and the aesthetics, but with the sweet vermouth - which is rose in colour the cherry is more appropriate for the same reasons. Just a matter of taste I suppose.

It has to be Plymouth Gin and just enough vermouth ( two capfulls to three ounces of gin) just enough to balance things out. Shake it, shake it and shake it somemore..... If the towel sticks it's ready. It has to have little pieces of ice floating in the sweet ambrosia of Gin and Vermouth. Oh what the heck Gin or Vodka shaken ( bruised) or stirred. I think I will go make one more before midnight. Happy New year!

Originally posted by MossmanA proper Martini should be made by pouring some Extra Dry Martini over ice in your glass and swirling it around so that the ice gets covered by the Martini. You then drain of the Martini leaving you with the Martini soaked ice. Add a good quality vodka to the ice, and thats it. (Well maybe a green olive if you like) It should be virtually pure vodka with a hint of the Martini comming through from the ice.
I am a traditionalist I like Gin. Freeze the Gin, glasses and the shaker. one pickled onion and two olives. No vodka, or chocolate, cranberry juice. One martini, two martini, three martini, floor. Happy hic..New year. Bon Annee.😵

Hey Phil, take a hike.

Phil is right, as long as what he is calling Extra Dry Martini is a brand name of dry vermouth. And if the vodka is gin. A true martini is mostly gin, with barely a taste of dry vermouth, with an olive. If you use vodka, it is more correct to specify it as a vodka martini, but the rest is the same. And a martini with a pearl onion instead of an olive is properly called a gibson. Class dismissed! 😀😀

Actually I prefer a Negroni myself.
Bottoms up.
