Often when I go to look for open invites I see ones made by pretty low rated players for oponants who are 500+ points higher then them. Is there really any point to this - most players of that calabre are not going to be bothered playing someone that much lower then themselves apart from maybe just a laugh and a free win.
Secondly I, myself, would never play someone that much higher cause the chances are good that they would beat me and I wouldnt even understand why, they would just be that much better. Best if you want to challenge yourself is to play someone abou 200 points higher, that way there is an outside chance of a result and you will have a clue as to what is going on in the game.
I agree.
I don't think rating limits on open invites are to be encouraged at all.
Just now I was unable to take a game against someone of the same rating as they had stipulated a 1300 minimum. (I'm 1274)
I'm sure naturally players will be drawn to invites of a similar standard most of the time and secondly if a high ranked player really doesn't want to play a low ranked player then he can always politely decline the offer.

Playing a high ranked player is fun for me and the chat is fun to if they don't mind.
If you play snooker against a good player...learn defence. Still fun.
Originally posted by TyrannosauruschexI think there is a point. Perhaps your 1300 player wants to practice an opening against someone who will actually know some theory. I personally like this feature, it means i don't have to bother every single person over 2100 so i can play one of them, they are free to accept it if they want to. I've played a few set piece games against top 20 players this way, here's an interesting one....

Game 617288
This is what sets this site appart. On Yahoo i'd never get to play anyone over 1800!

Any person can log in here, use a handle, use a computer program... THEY (non-members) have NOTHING to lose! Cause even if they get caught, they'll just come back as yet another non-member. 🙁
If this isn't true I'd like Russ to correct me...?

I would disagree. Otherwise you could spend a lot of time declining offers outside the rating you want to play. You could have a difficult time getting people within the playing range to challenge you.
For example, if you are a 2000 rated player and have no rating limitations. You might keep getting your open invite accepted by players lower than 1500. Would spend more time declining invites than playing chess!
If you really want to play against a particular player, then message them privately if they are up for a challenge.
